Most major exchanges or third-party data platforms display this data publicly, with no extra subscription required — it's just a matter of building the habit of checking it before placing an order, rather than fixating on order book depth as the single indicator.

Besides funding rate and open interest, are there other relatively observable signals that can warn of liquidation risk in advance?

Another signal worth watching is how concentrated leveraged positions are at specific price levels — some third-party data platforms offer visualization tools like "liquidation heatmaps" that mark which price ranges currently have densely stacked leveraged positions. If the asset you plan to trade happens to have a dense liquidation cluster not far from the current price, that means the probability of a chain reaction rises noticeably once price reaches that range — this kind of tool lets you roughly answer, before placing an order, the question of "if price moves this direction, will it run into a dense liquidation cluster?"

It's also worth observing how extreme the long/short ratio has gotten — if the ratio has stayed skewed heavily toward one side for an extended period, that indicates market sentiment has become highly one-sided, and that uniformity itself is a fragility signal, since when most people are positioned the same way, any reverse price trigger puts a large volume of positions under pressure simultaneously. The most direct adjustment: when the market shows a sharp move, pause before asking "is this an opportunity" and ask instead "is this part of a liquidation cascade." If the current sharp price move is accompanied by signals like extreme funding rates and open interest surging in tandem, that suggests the move is likely driven by chain-reaction liquidations rather than a simple shift in sentiment — chasing price into a position under those conditions means taking on risk inside an environment already known to be structurally fragile, far riskier than usual.

Another practical adjustment is evaluating "does depth look thick enough" separately from "is market structure healthy" — don't assume a trading environment is safe just because the order book looks sufficiently deep. If a book's thickness comes mainly from market makers continuously quoting, that depth is relatively stable.
