But pull apart the structure and a genuine mismatch emerges: every ZEC the fund holds sits in a fully transparent Coinbase custody wallet, the kind anyone can inspect on a Block Explorer — while Zcash's entire reputation as a privacy coin rests on zero-knowledge proofs that hide transaction amounts and both counterparties. In other words, what ZCSH sells you is price exposure to ZEC, not the feature that makes ZEC ZEC in the first place.
ZCSH began life as Grayscale's private Zcash Trust, launched in 2017, which traded for years on the OTCQX market with wild pricing swings — premiums as high as 240% and discounts as deep as 55% relative to net asset value, since the old structure had no creation-and-redemption mechanism to keep price tethered to the underlying. Because the entire point of a shielded pool is to make transactions invisible to outside observers, the development team itself couldn't retroactively confirm whether the flaw had ever been exploited. Engineers deployed an emergency soft fork in early June to freeze new activity in the pool, then activated a hard fork codenamed Ironwood on July 28, standing up a new shielded pool backed by more than 2,700 machine-checked Formal Verification theorems, and sealing the old Orchard pool behind a 'turnstile' accounting mechanism. That legacy pool now only permits withdrawals — new deposits are blocked — and the roughly 3.66 million ZEC (about $1.7 billion) locked inside it must pass through the turnstile check before leaving, so anyone can independently verify the Circulating Supply hasn't been inflated. None of this touches ZCSH. Every ZEC the ETF holds stays in fully transparent addresses; it never enters, and doesn't need to enter, the shielded pool. This entire crisis over Zcash's core supply integrity happened in a parallel universe from the ETF's investors.
If you're considering ZCSH because you buy the narrative that "Zcash offers privacy Bitcoin lacks," it's worth being precise about what you're actually purchasing: price exposure to ZEC, not access to the privacy technology itself. Your position in the fund is entirely visible and traceable — no different, on the privacy dimension, from simply holding ZEC on a centralized exchange. If your use case genuinely requires shielded-pool protection (say, not wanting a counterparty or third party to trace fund flows), the ETF structure does nothing for you; you'd still need to operate a wallet that supports shielded addresses yourself. The 2.5% annual fee is also a real long-term cost — over a ten-year horizon, management fees alone could eat over a quarter of your position's value, before accounting for any residual tracking difference between NAV and market price that the arbitrage mechanism doesn't fully eliminate. If your goal is simply directional exposure to ZEC through an existing brokerage account, ZCSH solves an access problem. If your goal involves privacy itself, this ETF is not the tool you're looking for.
